What is the B1/B2 visa?
The B1/B2 visa is a non-immigrant U.S. visa intended for individuals traveling for business (B1) or tourism/medical purposes (B2). It is suitable for travelers who are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, or who need to stay in the U.S. for more than 90 days. Common reasons for B1 use include attending meetings, conferences, or negotiating contracts, while B2 covers tourism, visiting family or friends, or receiving medical treatment. Upon entry, the maximum stay is usually up to 6 months.
This visa often allows for multiple entries and may be valid for up to 10 years, depending on the applicant’s nationality. The application process includes completing the DS-160 form, scheduling an in-person interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate, and presenting documents to support the purpose of the trip and ties to the home country. While it takes longer to obtain than an ESTA, the B1/B2 visa offers greater flexibility for travelers with more complex or extended travel plans.
