Common questions
The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital pre-approval for visa-free travelers visiting South Korea for short stays. It’s required for citizens of the countries in Korea’s visa-waiver program, though a temporary exemption currently applies to nationals of some of those countries (including the US, UK, Canada and Australia) through December 31, 2026.
No. The K-ETA is a screening authorization for visa-free travel, not a visa. It only covers short-term visits like tourism, business or transit. If you need to work, study long-term or live in Korea, you’ll need a traditional visa from a Korean embassy or consulate instead.
Yes. Jeju Island is part of South Korea, so a standard K-ETA covers travel there as well as the mainland. No separate authorization is needed. If you fly directly to Jeju without passing through another Korean airport, you don’t need a K-ETA at all.
It depends on your transit type. If you stay within the airport’s international transit area and don’t pass through immigration, you typically don’t need a K-ETA. If you’re leaving the airport or connecting through immigration, you’ll usually need one.
Yes. The K-ETA covers tourism, business meetings, visiting family and other short-term purposes, not just leisure travel.
No. If you already hold a valid Korean visa for your purpose of travel, you don’t need a K-ETA on top of it. The K-ETA is only for visa-free entry.
No. The K-ETA doesn’t permit employment (paid or unpaid) or long-term study, such as a full degree program. Those require a separate, specific visa category.
