Do US Citizens Need a Visa for the UK?

The US is on the UK's visa-waiver list, which means American passport holders can visit the UK for tourism, business, family visits, and short-term study without applying for a standard visa.

What you do need is a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (mandatory since February 25, 2026), known as the ETA. Airlines are required to verify ETA status before boarding. No ETA, no flight.

UK Visa Requirements for US Citizens

• Valid US passport for the full duration of your stay, in good physical condition, with at least one blank page

The UK ETA for US Citizens Explained

The UK ETA is a digital pre-travel authorisation, think of it as the UK's version of the US ESTA. It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry, but without one, you won't be allowed to board. Once approved, it's valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers unlimited entries with stays of up to 6 months each. Types of UK Visas Available to US Citizens

For trips that go beyond tourism, here are the main routes available to Americans:

Standard Visitor Visa 

For US citizens not eligible for an ETA, Same 6-month stay, same permitted activities, and the processing time is around 3 weeks.

Skilled Worker Visa 

The main route for Americans moving to the UK for work. Requires a job offer from a licensed UK employer, a graduate-level role, and a minimum salary of £41,700. It is valid for up to 5 years.

Student Visa 

This is for study programs exceeding 6 months. Requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), proof of funds, and a valid passport. US citizens are typically exempt from the English language test. Allows up to 20 hours of work per week during term time. 

Family Visa 

For US citizens joining a British citizen or settled person as a spouse, partner, or dependent. 

Graduate Visa 

For US students who have completed a UK degree and want to stay and work without a sponsor. It is valid for 2 years.

Can I visit England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with the same visa?

Yes. A single UK ETA or UK visa covers all four nations of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. You do not need separate authorizations. Note that the Republic of Ireland is a separate country with its own immigration system and is not covered by the UK ETA.

Is travel insurance required to visit the UK?

No. The UK does not require proof of travel insurance for entry. However, it is strongly recommended.
