Vietnam visa policy & requirements

Vietnam has made it easier than ever to visit, with a fully online eVisa system open to citizens of all countries and territories worldwide. Most travelers simply apply for an eVisa before departure, receive approval by email, and present it at immigration.

The Vietnam eVisa is valid for a maximum of 90 days and has single and multiple-entry options. It covers tourism, business, and family visits, making it a flexible option for the vast majority of travelers.

One thing worth knowing upfront: the entry point listed on your approved eVisa must exactly match the port where you arrive. If your travel plans change, you must apply for a new eVisa with the updated entry point, there are no exceptions at the border. So always confirm your itinerary before applying.

On arrival, standard entry rules apply. You'll need a valid passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity, a digital copy of your passport's bio page, and a recent passport-sized photo taken against a white background. Having your printed eVisa approval and proof of onward travel accessible will also help things move smoothly at immigration.

Overstaying is treated as a serious immigration violation. Penalties range from 500,000 to 10,000,000 VND depending on the duration of the overstay. As of January 2026, Vietnam has significantly increased overstay fines, with penalties now reaching up to VND 40,000,000 (approximately $1,519 USD) for the most serious cases. In addition to fines, longer overstays can result in deportation, a temporary ban on re-entry, and complications in future visa applications. Always apply for a new visa or exit before your current authorization expires.
