ESTA isn't a visa: it's an electronic travel authorization for citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries. It lets you visit the U.S. for tourism, business or transit for up to 90 days, and the whole application is done online.
A visa works differently. It's issued by a U.S. embassy or consulate and usually involves an in-person interview. You'll need one if your country isn't part of the VWP, if you want to stay longer than 90 days, or if you're going to work, study or for any other reason ESTA doesn't cover.
Keep in mind that ESTA can never replace a visa when one is required. And if you already have a valid U.S. visa, you can travel with it for its original purpose without applying for ESTA.
No, you don't need both. If your U.S. visa is valid and covers the purpose of your trip, you can travel with it and skip the ESTA application.
Yes. Your ESTA is tied to the passport you used to apply, so when that passport expires, your ESTA does too. Just submit a new application with your new passport details.
