The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an online travel authorization for citizens of countries that participate in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It allows eligible travelers to visit the United States for tourism, business or transit without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days. ESTA is not a visa but a required pre-screening for travelers entering the U.S. by air or sea. It must be approved before traveling and is typically valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires.

Applying for ESTA is a quick and fully online process, usually approved in 72 hours or less. While it simplifies entry for many travelers, ESTA does not guarantee admission to the U.S.: final approval is granted by a Customs and Border Protection officer upon arrival. ESTA is ideal for short visits, but those planning to stay longer or engage in activities beyond the allowed scope (like studying or working) will need to apply for a visa instead.
