Almost all visitors to India need a visa, unless they come from one of the countries with a bilateral visa-free agreement. For the vast majority of nationalities, the process is straightforward: India's eVisa scheme is available to nationals of over 166 countries, covering tourism, business, medical visits, and more, all applied for entirely online without any embassy visit required.
Japan, South Korea and UAE nationals are eligible for visa on arrival at selected airports, though the eVisa is still available to them as an alternative.
There are a couple of important restrictions to be aware of. Anyone who, or whose parents or grandparents, were born in or permanently resided in Pakistan is not eligible for an eVisa and must apply to their local Indian mission instead. Pakistani citizens have had their visas cancelled and visa issuance suspended indefinitely as of April 2025.
The eVisa is only valid for entry through designated airports and seaports. If you plan to enter through a land border crossing, you will need a regular sticker visa obtained through an Indian embassy or consulate before you travel.
