ETIAS is an online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. It's not a visa.
ETIAS isn't in operation yet, and the EU hasn't confirmed an official start date. The EU will announce the date several months before launch, and no applications are being accepted until then.
ETIAS will apply to 30 participating European countries across the Schengen Area. Ireland is not part of the scheme.
EU citizens, and citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, don't need it. You're also exempt if you hold a valid Schengen visa, a long-stay national visa, or a residence permit in a participating country.
Yes. A single ETIAS covers travel across all 30 participating countries. No need to apply separately for each one.
Yes. Once approved, it allows unlimited entries into the Schengen Area for up to 3 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each stay is still limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.
No. If you already hold a valid Schengen visa or long-stay visa, you don't need an ETIAS on top of it.
No. ETIAS only covers short stays like tourism, business, or short-term study. For long-term study, work, or residency, you'll need a separate visa.
Yes. Your ETIAS is linked to the passport you applied with, so a new passport means you'll need to apply again.
Yes. ETIAS covers business trips as well as tourism, short study or medical visits. If you're only changing flights, you'll only need it if you leave the airport's international transit area.
No. Approval means you're cleared to travel, but border officers still make the final decision at entry. Holding an ETIAS doesn't guarantee you'll be let in.
